Teaching Synthetic Phonics
At Butterknowle Primary School we use ‘Read Write Inc’ (RWI) synthetic phonics programme to deliver our phonics teaching throughout school. RWI programme integrates learning the letter sounds and letter formations through ‘handwrite’ and ‘soundwrite’ rhymes. In Class One our Reception children spend 15 – 20 minutes every day learning phonics. They learn Set One and Set Two Speed Sounds. Year 1 pupils consolidate set One and Set Two and learn Set Three sounds in preparation for their Year 1 Phonics Screening Test in June. Year Two pupils use their phonics knowledge to extend their phonic awareness and spelling.
Any child needing additional support with their learning of phonics may benefit from the one to one RWI intervention programme. This includes individual workbooks and activities.
Reading
We use Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) as our core reading scheme throughout school. In addition for supplementary reading and guided reading opportunities we use Read Write Inc reading books. Every child has a Lexia individualised programme which provides a structured approach to reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation and comprehension. It tracks pupil progress and designs interventions when consolidation is required.
