It is our intent at Butterknowle Primary School to provide all our children with a high-quality education in Modern Foreign Languages and to promote a love of languages. We hope to foster pupil’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the wider world providing children with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and appreciation of different cultures and compare these to their own. We provide opportunities to communicate for practical purposes and enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language, understanding and responding, both in speech and writing.
Children will develop their confidence in languages by developing skills throughout their time in KS2. French will be taught on alternate weeks throughout the year. Throughout units of work, teachers will make links and encourage children to make links between the children’s mother tongue and the target language, as well as their own culture and other countries’ cultures. Lessons will cover the key skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing and demonstrate a steady development in understanding of phonics, vocabulary, grammar. Children will be supported to develop their skills through exposure to songs, rhymes and stories in the target language. Lessons will be planned in sequences that provide children with the opportunities to review, remember, deepen, and apply their understanding. As their confidence and skills develop, children will be encouraged to respond with increasing complexity both orally and in writing.
Pupils should have developed a broad vocabulary, understand some grammatical structures and be able to write simple sentences. Children should be able to hold a conversation and express an opinion and be able to read and understand a simple story. Our aim is to prepare pupils for the next stage of their education and for life.
